    Stroke Center

The Stroke Center has been in charge of stroke and cerebrovascular disease patients of the Southern Gyeonggi region for more than 20 years.
The Stroke Center is protecting the brain health of Southern Gyeonggi citizens 24/7 with extensive experiences and systematic treatment protocol.

Since its foundation, Ajou University Hospital has treated the most number of acute stroke patients in the country and has accumulated extensive clinical experiences. The Stroke ICU provides the best treatment to stroke patients who experience frequent neurological changes and focuses on treating severe stroke patients.

Especially, the Fast thrombolysis code of the Ajou Stroke Team (FAST) treatment protocol has been established for the quick treatment of large vessel occlusion cerebral infarction—which is a severe cerebrovascular disease—and subarachnoid hemorrhage due to brain aneurysm rupture, contributing to establishing a stroke safety network within the region by providing the best treatment to stroke patients through regular indicator monitoring and multidisciplinary treatments between the Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation departments.

The Stroke Center has first started the public awareness campaign for stroke in Korea based on the “Neighbor-Hand-Foot” slogan, and it is conducting training on cerebrovascular diseases for 119 paramedics for the quick transportation of severe patients in collaboration with the Gyeonggi Disaster and Safety Headquarters and Korean Stroke Society. Stroke awareness promotion activities are continuously conducted through customized patient education and Stroke Day events.
Stroke patients require continuous recovery treatment after the acute phase because permanent neurological defects occur and disabilities remain. For this, the most appropriate treatment is continued through linked collaboration with local hospitals, with treatments provided in cooperation with Ajou University Intermediate Care Hospital for patients to return to their daily lives.

Regarding research fields, innovative clinical studies (publication of approximately 400 papers in SCI journals for the past 25 years), development of new technology through linkage with the core source technologies of the Medical Center (research-centered hospital Cerebrovascular Disease Unit), and focused research from the Ajou University Brain Institute and Laboratory (Brain Disease Lab) are conducted to apply new research results to clinical treatments.
